The Breckenridge Music Festival (BMF) closed out its summer festival season with “The Music of Change,” on Friday, Aug. 12. Then on Saturday, Aug. 13, BMF partnered with Breckenridge Creative Arts to host Sila: The Breath of the World, as part of the Breckenridge Festival of Arts (BIFA), a 10-day multi-disciplinary event. Sila: The Breath of the World by John Luther Adams, presented by Steven Schick and BMF musicians, featured orchestra musicians set loose from the conductor’s baton and allowed to play at their own tempo, with just one condition: each sustained tone or rising phrase lasts the length of a full exhalation.
Schick, conductor, Kathryn Hatmaker, violin, and Maya Beiser, cello, performed at the Riverwalk Center later that evening.
L’Homme Cirque, a one-man circus featuring Switzerland’s David Dimitri, will perform for his final day on Sunday, Aug. 14 in the South Gondola Lot.
Also on Sunday, BMF will present Yoga with the Birds with Schick and BMF musicians. The event will give patrons the chance to enjoy the music of nature and a gentle stretch with Meta Yoga Studios in the quiet mountain morning landscape. Starting during the Savasana of the class, the orchestra’s flute and percussion section will perform songbirdsongs by environmental composer John Luther Adams. The free class is on the Riverwalk Center lawn at 8 a.m.
