Winter travel season, and its seasonal rules, begins on the White River National Forest

 #colorado #realestate #breckenridge

The White River National Forest winter travel season is underway.

During the winter season, all wheeled vehicles, including bicycles, are limited to plowed routes to protect snow conditions for winter recreation and to protect road quality.

“These winter regulations are an important part of keeping the White River National Forest a premiere location for winter recreation by helping maintain conditions for activities like snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing,” Forest Supervisor Scott Fitzwilliams said.

In many areas of the White River National Forest, snowmobile clubs groom roads for snowmobiling and cross-country skiing as a public service using volunteer time and funding from private and partner sources. At the Vail Pass Winter Recreation Area, user fees pay for trail grooming, plowed parking and user education. Respecting signs and travel restrictions will help protect this investment in maintaining groomed surfaces and winter recreation opportunities.

Snow levels are still relatively low across much of the forest, including the popular Vail Pass Winter Recreation Area.

Part of a house slid down a mountain in Colorado. What did it take for a tow company to recover it in one piece?

 #breckenridge #realestate #colorado

A modular home slid over a cliffside in the Colorado Rocky Mountains when the semitractor-trailer hauling it up a steep, icy road in Blue River slipped downhill and jackknifed just before the Thanksgiving holiday.

Getting the home back on the truck without damaging it beyond repair proved to be one of the most difficult missions Mountain Recovery, a Silverthorne-based towing company, has ever completed, according to Charlie Stubblefield, the company’s owner.

“It was definitely top five in terms of level of difficulty,” Stubblefield said, “and it’s because you’re dealing with an oversized load. It’s 13 feet, 6 inches tall, 16 feet wide and 60 feet long.”

Mountain Recovery was there Tuesday night, Nov. 21, when the modular home slid off the mountainside. Stubblefield said the homeowner had called the tow company because the semitractor-trailers that had hauled the disassembled home most of the way to its destination were struggling to complete the last stretch up a dirt road off Colorado Highway 9.

Mountain Recovery had one of its heavy wreckers on scene, and the operator had towed the first semitractor-trailer halfway up the hill before it was able to make it the rest of the way on its own, Stubblefield said.

These Summit County restaurants are open on Thanksgiving

 #colorado #realestate #breckenridge

Not everyone wants to labor over a large meal on Thanksgiving. For some, the holiday tradition involves enjoying a meal at a local restaurant.

Finding out what restaurants are open, what they’re offering and if a reservation is needed can be almost as much of a hassle as cooking. That’s why we’ve put together this guide for the community.

A small hydroelectric plant with big water rights is the center of a proposal to keep Colorado River water in the state

 #colorado #breckenridge #realestate

A Western Slope coalition is making a play to buy the water rights of a small hydropower plantwith a big role in how water moves across Colorado. If the group succeeds, farmers, water providers, anglers and rafters say they could sleep more easily for years into the future.

“Any kind of an agreement that would take the unknown out of the situation is a relief and allows me to sleep at night,” said Ken Murphy, who owns the rafting company Glenwood Adventure Company. “Recreation is only one aspect to this, and we’re just a small aspect of this, but a very important aspect in our local community.”

The Shoshone Power Plant, owned by Xcel Energy, is small compared with some of the company’s other power plants, but its right to water on the Colorado River is one of the oldest and largest within state lines. Local economies and communities from Glenwood Springs to Grand Junction are dependent on consistent flows out of the plant and have been worried for decades about another entity snapping up the Shoshone water rights and siphoning off their water supply.

The coalition, led by the Colorado River Water Conservation District, wants to buy the water rights for $98.5 millionand lease them back to Xcel, a move it believes would protect the water and keep it in the river forever. The negotiations are in the early stages, and state officials are weighing some fundamental questions about the agreement. But the decadeslong effort to purchase the rights seems to be experiencing a moment of “convergence” that has Western Slope water users feeling hopeful.

Skyline Cinema 8 owner says he’s not interested in selling property to developer proposing major changes in Dillon

 #colorado #realestate #breckenridge

The owner of the Skyline Cinema 8 in Dillon says he has no interest in selling his property to a developer who just last week discussed building workforce housing there during a meeting with the town council.

Brian Mitchell, who owns Mitchell Theaters with 15 locations across seven states, said on Tuesday, Nov. 14, that he was surprised to learn that his business’s Summit County location had been discussed at the Dillon Town Council meeting a week earlier.

Mitchell said developer Jake Porritt, who has pitched a major redevelopment of the Dillon town core, approached him last year with some of his ideas, but, ultimately, there was nothing the cinema owner was interested in being involved with. He said he had not heard from Porritt or his companies, JGJP Dillon LLC and the Porritt Group, in several months.

“We wished Jake and the Porritt Group the best of luck with their project and have not had any communication with them since,” Mitchell said.

Mitchell Theaters has no plans to sell the Skyline Cinema property to Porritt or be a part of the redevelopment, Mitchell said. Although the COVID-19 pandemic and the recent Hollywood strikes have presented “some interesting challenges,” he said the theater is doing just fine and continues to make upgrades, including plans to install electric vehicle chargers in the parking lot.

What trails and lifts are open at Summit County ski areas as Colorado resorts race to drop ropes

 #breckenridge #colorado #realestate

The 2023-24 ski and ride season may still be its infant stages, but progress is constantly being made across Summit County’s mountains to open up more terrain to the public.

As of Thursday morning, Nov. 9, Keystone Resort led the way with the largest amount of lifts and terrain open to the public. This week, Keystone opened up top-to-bottom skiing for the first time time this season, with guests able to start from the top of Dercum Mountain and snake their way back to River Run Village.

With unseasonably warm temperatures stalling snowmaking progress over the last few weeks, Arapahoe Basin Ski Area still only has one run and one lift open after opening to the public on Oct. 29. Skiers and riders can take the Black Mountain Express lift to access the Lower Mountain Blues on the front side of the mountain.

Breckenridge Ski Resort and Loveland Ski Area will host opening day celebrations on Friday. Breckenridge will begin the season with approximately 50 acres of terrain accessed via the newly upgraded Five SuperChair and the Colorado SuperChair.
