Breckenridge summer projects open to public comment

#Breckenridge, Colorado.

The White River National Forest is seeking feedback on a proposal from Breckenridge Ski Resort to complete a number of summer activities and improvements that are included in the resort’s 2013 master development plan.
The U.S. Forest Service is preparing an Environmental Impact Statement to analyze and disclose the potential environmental effects of implementing the projects. All of the proposed projects are within Breckenridge’s existing forest service-administered special use permit boundary, according to a White River National Forest news release.
The proposed action includes enhancing year-round recreational opportunities at Breckenridge Ski Resort by constructing and operating two zip lines, three canopy tours, two challenge courses, new and realigned hiking and mountain bike trails, off-highway vehicle tours, and additional lifts for scenic rides and activities access.
The proposed action also includes improvements to the Vista Haus and Independence SuperChair summit sites, realignment of Four O’Clock Road, expansion of the Peak 7 Hut and deck, expansion of the Vista Haus deck, construction of a climbing wall at Vista Haus and a lookout tower on Peak 8.
Over the past several decades, summer recreation activities and national forest management practices have evolved beyond what are considered traditional activities. The goal of the project is to offer a comprehensive range of opportunities to engage new users visiting public lands, the release stated.
“The ski areas on the White River National Forest are important gateways to public lands,” said Scott Fitzwilliams, forest supervisor for the White River National Forest, in the release. “We offer world-class recreational opportunities at these resorts. These projects will allow the forest service to better reach those audiences who may not be familiar with public lands and provide activities that cater to a wider range of recreationists.”
A public open house regarding the proposal is scheduled for 4:30-6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 5 at Mountain Thunder Lodge, 50 Mountain Thunder Drive in Breckenridge. Representatives from the Forest Service and Breckenridge Ski Resort will be present to answer questions and provide additional information about the project.
Public comments are being accepted until Wednesday, March 12, the release stated. Comments can be sent to Scott Fitzwilliams, Forest Supervisor, c/o Roger Poirier, Project Leader, 120 Midland Ave, Suite 140, Glenwood Springs, CO 81601.
