Beginning May 10, Summit County kicks off its 2017 maintenance work on the Summit County Recreational Pathway System, starting with the Dillon Dam section of the recpath (in the vicinity of the Dillon Dam control buildings). The work on this section will last approximately four weeks, according to a release from the county.
Crews will conduct improvements on about 600 feet of existing asphalt, including widening, regrading, asphalt replacement and drainage improvements, which involves new catch basins and gutters, fence relocation, guardrail replacement and slope stabilization.
"This project replaces a section of the recpath that is in substandard condition," said Jason Lederer, senior resource specialist for Summit County Open Space and Trails. "It improves safety for recpath users and enhances their recreational experience. The contractor will make every effort to have the project completed ahead of schedule, weather permitting."
So what are your options for a recpath ride this May? The contractor will maintain a recpath detour along Dillon Dam Road during construction. One-lane closures of the Dam Road are anticipated from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. (Monday through Friday). The reservoir overlook near the southwest end of the dam will also be temporarily closed to the public while the contractor uses this area for staging. All travelers through this area, including recpath users and auto drivers, should be aware and respectful of adjacent construction operations to ensure safety for all, the release continued.
"This work is critical to improve the recpath facility, to reduce the sand that accumulates on the path, and to provide a smoother ride for cyclists and other pathway users," Open Space and Trails director Brian Lorch said. "We thank recpath users for their patience during these repairs."
Construction will not occur during weekends or holidays to minimize project impacts to road and pathway travelers. For more information, contact the Open Space and Trails department at 970-668-4060.
