Frisco officials are planning a dredging project at the Dillon Reservoir in Frisco Bay to improve access for users and lengthen the season for marina operations.
The town’s staff applied for a permit through the Army Corps of Engineers, and said they hope to get the go-ahead for the project by the end of June.
“We think it’s an important project to dredge the marina,” town manager Bill Efting said during the Frisco chapter of the Summit Chamber of Commerce meeting on Thursday evening.
The plan is to remove 75,000 cubic yards of sediment from the reservoir bottom near the rental slips, where the creek flows into the bay, Efting said. The project would double the depth of the bay in that area to 8 or 9 feet deep, he said. Sediment also would be taken from the north side of the pier and relocated to the east and south of the pier.
“It’s cheaper to move the dirt within the reservoir than to truck it out,” Efting said.
Right now, the marina is dealing with changing water levels by repositioning the docks as water levels rise and fall.
“The dredging project will allow marina staff to position customer docks earlier in the season and stay in longer during the season,” Frisco Bay marina manager Phil Hofer said.
Project representatives said they won’t know exactly how much the project will cost until a permit is issued and contractors submit bids. Contributions from an environmental-enhancement matching fund through the Denver Water Settlement should help to finance the project, representatives said. The town is also prepared to ask the council to borrow from the water fund to move forward with the project, Efting said.
The town had hoped to have the dredging project done for this season, but Efting said he’s hopeful it can be done soon.
“The stars didn’t align this spring,” he said. “We wish they would have but they didn’t.”
The town regards the marina as both as an economic driver and a destination.
“We are proud of our marina,” Efting said.
The marina is hosting its “Rock the Dock” party today from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The season-opener celebrates the summer boating season with food and drink specials at the Island Grill and a free concert in Marina Park.
