As the trails on Breckenridge Ski Resort’s Peak 6 expansion are being carved out, Summit County locals are being invited to make their mark on the new terrain.
The resort’s staff are looking for trail names and they’re asking for the public’s help in the process. If a participant’s idea is selected, it will appear on the resort’s trail map and land a spot in Breck’s permanent history. Trail name winners will also get their own sign with the winning name, and two 2-day lift tickets to experience Peak 6 during the 2013-2014 ski season.
“The public has been very involved and passionate about the project in general,” said Kieran Cain, Breckenridge Ski Resort’s marketing director.
Resort staff has sought out public input from the inception of the expansion to the environmental review process, he said.
“We thought, ‘Let’s continue that public involvement and see what people can come up with,’ ” Cain said. “The more people who throw in ideas the better,” he said.
Contest organizers said they aren’t looking for any old name, but one that encompasses the spirit of the resort and the new territory. The project is expanding the horizon for resort guests, and staff said the trail names should reflect that.
“Peak 6 a special place among all of the other peaks,” Cain said. “We like the idea of exploring new territory and awakening the senses — let the new peak help you discover things about yourself you never knew were possible.”
Contest entries should relate to the new peak’s theme of “awakening the sixth sense.” Trail names that follow the theme are more likely to be chosen by the resort’s internal selection committee.
Cain said the resort has about 30 trails to name and expects all of them to be named by the public.
Ideas will have to stand out from the crowd. The contest has been open for less than a week, and already about 1,000 people have contributed from around the nation and the globe, Cain said.
“We’ve had an outpouring of participation, and overall, we’ve been really impressed,” he said.
