As officials prepare to update a 2008 Summit County hazard mitigation plan, they are asking for public input on the document at a public open house to be held from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday in the Buffalo Mountain Room in the County Commons building in Frisco.
Attendees will have an opportunity to learn about the plan, review the results of a countywide risk assessment and offer feedback on concerns and priorities for reducing the risk of natural disasters in the county.
The plan addresses the threat of disasters including wildfires, flooding, severe winter storms, drought and avalanches; it sets goals for reducing the impact of such events on community members and their property, according to a statement issued by the Summit County government.
Officials say the destruction caused by many natural events can be reduced or eliminated through preparation and planning, which have become primary goals of FEMA’s.
Local entities participating in the development of the plan include the towns of Dillon, Breckenridge, Frisco, Silverthorne and Blue River, several special districts, Lake Dillon Fire-Rescue and the Red, White and Blue Fire Protection District and the Denver Water board.
Feedback gained during the open house will be included in the plan where appropriate. The final document will be made available for public review and comment, the release stated. It will be submitted to the Colorado Office of Emergency Management for approval, then to the leading bodies of each of the local agencies involved for adoption.
