Winners of 32nd International Snow Sculpture Championships announced in Breckenridge following 94 hours of hand-carved artistry

 #colorado #coloradorealestate

The winners of the 32nd annual International Snow Sculpture Championships — hosted in the town of Breckenridge — were announced Friday, Jan. 27, capping off a 94-hour challenge that saw teams of artists from around the world hand-carve towering structures amid bitterly cold temperatures. Awards were presented by Toyota officials during a ceremony Friday night hosted in the Riverwalk Center.

Team Bavaria (Germany) won the gold medal for their sculpture, “Sub-Zero-Gravity.” The design is “inspired by the concepts of concrete art and minimalism and plays not only with the nature of the snow in its given circumstances, but even more with its gravitational properties,” according to a press release from Lauren Swanson, public relations director for the Breckenridge Tourism Office.

Team Breckenridge (USA) won silver for their  “Ullr” sculpture while Team Lithuania won bronze for their piece, “Warn(m)ing Clouds Intersect.”

Summit County commissioners nix nightly caps, add booking limit to short-term rental regulations ahead of final vote

 #colorado #coloradorealestate #breckenridge

Summit County Commissioner Elisabeth Lawrence

During their first reading of an ordinance to limit the number of short-term rental licenses in Summit County’s unincorporated areas, the Summit Board of County Commissioners voted to replace a cap on nightly stays with a yearly limit on individual bookings by property owners.

It marks a reversal from the board’s previous decision to include and enforce night limits, though the booking cap — set at 26 — is intended to achieve the same goal of reducing complaints from short-term rental neighbors. Regulations will affect only properties that rent for less than 30 days at a time.

That change is set to be included in the ordinance set before the commissioners on Feb. 15, when they will take a final vote on implementing the policy.

The policy debate and change by commissioners came without a public hearing — which is standard for first readings per county guidelines but which frustrated several attendees, some of whom stood out of their seats to interject as commissioners were speaking.

Mikaela Shiffrin wins World Cup No. 83 in Kronplatz, Italy, to claim female wins record

 #colorado #coloradorealestate

ITALY — Mikaela Shiffrin is alone at the top among female Alpine skiers.

In Tuesday’s giant slalom in Kronplatz, Italy, Shiffrin won her 83rd-career World Cup, surpassing Lindsey Vonn. Shiffrin led from start to finish at the Kronplatz resort in the Italian Dolomites, crossing 0.45 seconds ahead of world champion Lara Gut-Behrami and 1.43 ahead of home favorite and former overall champion Federica Brignone after also posting the fastest first run.

It was the second time in her career Shiffrin has won in Kronplatz, as she also took a giant slalom in January of 2019. It was also her 18th-career giant slalom World Cup win, second most behind Vreni Schneider (20).

Shiffrin now needs only three more wins to match Ingemark Stenmark’s overall mark — between men and women — of 86 victories.

Silverthorne council approves caps on short-term rental licenses

 #colorado #coloradorealestate

About the only town left in Summit County without a short term rental cap is Heney!

Silverthorne Town Council became the third governing body in Summit County to approve a cap on short-term rental licenses after a majority of its council members voted for the measure during a Jan. 11 meeting.

Most of the town will now be capped at 10% to 50% — meaning no more than half the housing units in any given area can be used as short-term rentals. The move came after months of public outreach and community discussion about regulating an industry that has garnered both praise and concern from property owners and local residents.

Mark Leidal, assistant town manager and community development director, said Silverthorne currently has around 302 short-term rental licenses — a slight increase from 280 last month when council members last discussed the ordinance. With the new caps in place, the town could support up to 740 licenses, which Leidal said gives the industry “plenty of room.”

 #colorado #coloradoRealEstate

After 27 years of calling Main Street Frisco home, the annual Colorado BBQ Challenge festival will be relocating 7 miles west on I-70 to Copper Mountain Resort.

The festival was scaled back in 2022 and then permanently ended by the Frisco Town Council in October of last year. The event will now call Copper home for the 2023 festival.

The Colorado BBQ Challenge is Colorado’s longest running barbeque competition and will continue to be sanctioned by the Kansas City BBQ Society. For 2023, attendees can expect a similar event to years past, including barbecue, music, competitions and community.

The event will take place on Father’s Day weekend from June 15-17. Like previous years, the event will remain free for guests to attend with food and beverage tickets for purchase.

Summer resort activities like scenic gondola rides, the Rocky Mountain Coaster, Woodward Wrecktangle, climbing wall, zip line, bumper boats, bungee trampoline and go-karts will be offered for enjoyment throughout the weekend.

Shiffrin equals Vonn with 82nd career World Cup win on Sunday in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia

#colorado #coloradorealestate

SLOVENIA — 82 down, one to go.

Mikaela Shiffrin’s climb to all-time greatness reached its penultimate step on Sunday morning in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, as the American won her 82nd career World Cup race, tying her with Lindsey Vonn for the most ever by a female Alpine skier. The 27-year-old blitzed the Podkoren 3 run in a combined two-run time of 1 minute, 52.53 seconds — posting the fastest time in both runs — to win her eighth race this season. Federica Brignone (1:53.30) came in second and Lara Gut-Behrami (1:53.50) was third.

“I hope someday I can ski like that again because it was maybe the best skiing I ever did in a GS,” Shiffrin told FIS afterward.

The Edwards skier took 232 World Cup starts to equal Vonn’s mark, winning 51 slaloms — a discipline record — 17 giant slaloms, five super-Gs, three downhills and one Alpine combined. Vonn, who retired at 34 on Feb. 10, 2019, after winning a world championship bronze medal, accumulated her wins this way: 43 in downhill, 28 in super-G, four in giant slalom, two in slalom and five in Alpine combined in 395 starts. Ingemar Stenmark holds the all-time Alpine wins record with 86.

Mikaela Shiffrin wins fifth straight World Cup to claim 81st-career win

CROATIA — For the last four seasons, Petra Vlhova has won the first World Cup race of the calendar year. On Wednesday in Zagreb, Croatia, however, it was Mikaela Shiffrin who revealed her first New Year’s resolution: start 2023 with a win.

The 27-year-old Edwards superstar inched one step closer to becoming the all-time winningest World Cup Alpine skier, using a first-run lead to gap the field and flawlessly managing the deteriorating Crveni spust course in run No. 2 to win her fifth-straight World Cup and 81st in her once-in-a-generation career.

“I felt really solid today,” she told reporters in a post-race press conference. “I had a good plan and I wasn’t holding back or (was) scared of something on the course. I just tried to push everywhere.”

The victory puts her one behind Lindsey Vonn (82), who wished Shiffrin a Happy New Year and said she was excited to watch the races, and five behind Ingemar Stenmark (86).
